If you’re a doting pet parent, you likely can’t bear the thought of taking a family vacation without your furry family members. Any type of travel requires preparation and transit considerations, and the same applies to travelling with cats and dogs. Here are some tips for safe and stress-free travelling with your cat or dog

- Trial Run:
- Prepare your pet for a long trip by taking them on a few short drives first. Take note of their response to the car rides – do they get anxious, wet themselves, whine or seem very distressed? If so, you may need to consider obtaining a prescription from your vet for anti-anxiety medication to help relieve their stress during the trip.
- Travel Crate:
- Ensure that you purchase a quality travel crate / carrier for your cat or dog. The crate should be well-ventilated and large enough for your pet to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably in.
- The crate should be easily and securely buckled into the backseat using a seatbelt. Ensure that you disable the airbags where the crate will be secured to avoid injury to your pet in the event of deployment.
- Get your pet accustomed to their crate before the journey by using it when you go on your test drives. The crate should also be placed in their frequented areas in your home to help them associate it with comfort.
- Health and Safety:
- Ensure your pet is microchipped and that their pet insurance policy is in effect.
- Add an extra tag to your pet’s collar that includes your destination address and contact information.
- Bring your pet’s medical records along in case of an emergency.
- Deworm your pet and ensure they are given flea and tick prevention medication before you set off.
- Carry a first-aid kit for pets with you, which you can obtain from your local vet.
- Never allow your pet to stick their head or any part of their body out the window while travelling.
- On the Road:
- Feed your pet at the same time you normally would before you begin your journey. This will help you determine when they will need a bathroom break as per their normal routine.
- Take plenty of bottled water along for your pet to keep them hydrated throughout the journey.
- Keep your pet entertained and as comfortable on the journey as possible by bringing their favourite toys and bedding along.
- Make regular pit stops to allow your pet to stretch their legs and use the bathroom. Ensure that your dog or cat’s harness is on securely before opening the car doors.
- Flying with Pets:
- If your pet is still a kitten or puppy, is a senior, or is in ill health, it is advisable to rather keep them at home or find a suitable boarding kennel. Always consult your vet before considering any type of travel with your pet.
- Do thorough research on the destination’s requirements – will there be quarantine? What papers will you be required to produce for your pet’s arrival?
- Find a company that specialises in pet air travel and ensure they have adequate, positive references.
- As with car travel, make the trip as comfortable and safe as possible for your pet by giving them their favourite blanket or toy, having all their identification and pet insurance information in order, and getting them used to their travel carrier ahead of the time.
Don’t feel daunted by all the considerations and preparations involved in travelling with your four-legged loved one. Simply plan ahead, ensure you have everything well organised, and look forward to enjoying a well-deserved holiday with your whole family.
