Oneplan Pet Insurance lends a helping paw to CLAW: How you can help from home
During these difficult times, organisations across South Africa are banding together to support their communities. One recent example is Oneplan Pet Insurance who is committed to making a difference and raising awareness for an incredible initiative run by CLAW.
Find out how you too can make a difference in the lives of lovable dogs across Johannesburg and lend a helping hand to these animals in need from the comfort of your own home.
Who is CLAW?
CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare) is a non-profit, welfare organisation that aims to uplift poverty-stricken communities where veterinary services are unavailable. This incredible organisation has dedicated over 20 years to helping animals in need and is renowned as the pioneer of animal welfare and veterinary outreach services in the community.
Without animal pet insurance, dogs in these areas are unable to get the right healthcare services such as vaccinations, flea/tick treatment and even emergency services for illness and accidents. That’s why CLAW believes in making a real difference by offering support for veterinary services to malnourished animals within these communities.
What does CLAW do?
From animal advocacy to rescuing and rehoming unwanted animals, CLAW is changing the future of abandoned animals in South Africa and injecting new hope into communities. The organisation is able to do their great work with the support of community-based programs, local schools, the Department of Agriculture and other veterinary services around the city.
They also take their animal care efforts one step further by providing education on animal care to pet owners in Joburg’s township areas and advocating for a culture of accountability when it comes to caring for our animal friends. Isn’t that amazing?
Here are just a few of the amazing initiatives CLAW has put in place:
- Emergency veterinary services
- Vaccinations of domestic animals to prevent the spread of communicable diseases
- Deworming and dipping to prevent internal and external parasites
- Veterinary treatment of illness and injury in both pets and livestock
- Sterilisation of pets at CLAW clinic through regular outreach ‘Spayathons’ that help prevent unwanted litters which already impoverished communities struggle to sustain
- Rescue and rehoming of unwanted stray animals to loving adoptive homes (find out more about adoptions here)
- Animal advocacy using education and compassion to promote positive attitudes and perceptions with regards to animals and the humane treatment of them
- Humane euthanasia to end the suffering of terminally ill and hopeless cases
- Creating a culture of accountability
Why CLAW needs our help
The last few months of lockdown have really taken a toll on many organisations, and animal shelters are at the forefront of the suffering and loss. Local animal shelters across South Africa are calling out for help from each one of us.
The reality is that there is a very real possibility that CLAW may need to close their doors in the upcoming months. The idea of this is devastating for the team that works endlessly to support, care and treat animals in impoverished communities, as well as to the communities and animals they serve.
CLAW’s services are essential for the health and safety of our four-legged friends and, without CLAW, animals in the area will be left without any help or veterinary care.
That’s why we have a responsibility as fellow pet owners to support our furry members of society that need our help, now more than ever.
