Poodles have been known to be one of the more “glamorous” dog breeds around. And while they are rather energetic dogs, just know that there are a few non-negotiables when it comes to keeping this breed happy and healthy.
Look, I will be the first person to tell you that with our busy lifestyles, it’s easy to start slacking off when it comes to pet care. More often than not, taking adequate care of our friendly pooches finds itself at the bottom of our to-do list. So, take it from someone that’s been in your shoes and can empathise: you NEED to take care of your poodle.
No one is perfect.
That being said, your poodle genuinely relies on you for everything. So yes, after tackling your email inbox may have your energy tank on zero but save some reserve for your dog. In fact, ignoring your poodle’s needs can have physical, emotional and psychological effects.
Let’s all vow to be dedicated poodle parents – even when we sometimes don’t feel like it.
Committing to your poodle’s wellbeing
Now if you own a poodle, or plan to adopt one soon, you must understand that this breed does need quite a bit of TLC. Taking care of them means having a holistic approach to their health and wellbeing. Essentially, a little cuddle every couple of days isn’t going to cut it.
They give you love every day, and now it’s your turn to return the favour.
And here is a quick and easy breakdown of exactly how you’re going to do it. Live it, breathe it, print it out and watch your pet thrive under all of the love and care.
1. Maintain those pearly whites
You may not know this (and a number of renowned veterinarians can attest to this) but your dog needs to have its teeth brushed. In fact, your dog’s teeth need to be brushed daily. Now if you haven’t already clicked off of this blog after reading that statement, I’m happy you’re here.
Poodles are particularly prone to having severe dental problems. These issues lead to several physical illnesses like heart and kidney failure. So yes, their teeth are important. Brush them regularly. If you can brush your teeth, I suggest you do the same for your Poodle.
2. Tame the mane
Poodles are known (and loved) for their naturally curly hair. It’s lush, enviable and incredibly soft … if you maintain it. Poodles, without a doubt, need consistent grooming. Ignoring the needs of their hair means that dirt and oil get trapped beneath the fur. This leads to serious skin irritation. And so, make sure to take your Poodle to the groomers approximately every 6 to 8 weeks.
3. Let’s get physical
Poodles are incredibly energetic dogs, so you must embrace the great outdoors if this breed is going to be a part of your family. It is important to the well-being of your Poodle that you allow them to engage in physical activities regularly.
Regular outdoor activity is good for their overall health but specifically helps their internal systems like the cardiovascular and digestive. The stimulation that exercise gives will also keep their mental health strong. Poodles that don’t receive enough physical exercise become ill-behaved, stressed and violent in social situations or incredibly anxious.
It’s important to remember that exercise isn’t just about letting your pup run wild. It has both physical and mental benefits ... for the entire family.
4. What’s in the bowl?
To put it simply: your Poodle needs to be eating quality food. Don’t let your pockets decide on the type of food that your Poodle eats. Good nutrition wards off potential medical complications. When deciding on what to feed your pooch, make sure that there are no artificial ingredients and that it is as grain-free as possible.
You also want to make sure that their food is high in calcium, protein, vitamins and minerals. Foods that also contain Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are also great in maintaining a healthy coat. Items with EPA and DHA do wonders for your Poodle eyes and brain.
That being said, make sure that giving your Poodle water during mealtimes can cause serious bloating. Rather offer water once they have already eaten!
5. Taking (pet insurance) cover
Poodles need active medical care, and this point cannot be stressed enough. As a Poodle owner, you must understand that this breed is prone to a number of medical issues that will negatively impact their health. These issues apply to Toy, Miniature, or Standard sized Poodles.
Common medical issues include:
- Bleeding Disorders
- Seizures
- Dental Disease
- Hair Loss
- Hip Dysplasia (and other joint problems)
- Thyroid Problems
- Epilepsy
The best way to ensure your pet’s health is by taking out comprehensive pet insurance. No other form of coverage will better protect your Poodle than this insurance category. Not only will they cover your veterinarian bills (that QUICKLY add up) but they prioritise routine and wellness care.
Protecting, caring and supporting your Poodle means taking preventative care seriously. And no one takes it more seriously than a pet insurance company.
Poodles make for awesome companions and family pets. Paying attention to these tips and tricks will not only keep them in good shape but ensure that they live long, healthy and enjoyable lives!
Until next time,
